our story

At Frontier Mushrooms, our mission is to grow healthy, wholesome food using low-impact, regenerative practices. We're committed to sustainable farming practices that protect the land for future generations.  We believe that by supporting small-scale, regenerative agriculture, we can help build stronger and healthier communities.  We re-use and repurpose building materials and equipment as much as possible, and purchase locally-grown inputs to support our community.

About Frontier Mushrooms

Our Farm

At Frontier Mushrooms, we pay close attention to the science and art of mushroom-growing.  Our wood-loving forest mushrooms are lovingly cultivated indoors using the best combination of state-of-the-art growing techniques and small-batch methods, informed by nature.

We believe that fresh food can and should be grown by people within 100km of the consumer, and in that spirit, we work to train and consult with new and existing mushroom growers, while also supplying high-quality, consistent seed products, such as colonized substrate blocks and grain spawn to other growers throughout Ontario and beyond.

Our Market

We sell our fresh and dry mushrooms, grow kits, and supplies primarily at the St. Jacob's Market, in St. Jacob's, Ontario, just north of Waterloo.

Our stand at St. Jacob's Market offers a wide variety of fresh and delicious mushrooms, including  blue oyster, shiitake, chestnut, lion's mane, yellow oyster, black king oyster, and more.

We aspire to provide a consistent, high-quality product at our market, and we are happy to consult with additional outlets, including local restaurants, health food stores, and grocery stores.

See our online catalog for additional options.

Our Community

At Frontier Mushrooms, we believe in supporting our local community. We work closely with other farmers and producers to promote local agriculture and sustainable farming practices.  We offer educational tours and workshops for schools and community groups to teach people about the importance of regenerative farming techniques and where their food comes from.

Our dream is to see these kinds of mushrooms at every farmers market in Ontario, and to develop in all Ontarians an understanding of the health and environmental benefits of gourmet forest mushrooms.
